    509. “That” NYT Article on ADHD: Challenging Our Beliefs

Would you rather read the transcript? Click here.

In this episode, I dig into the widely discussed New York Times Magazine article, “Have We Been Thinking About ADHD All Wrong?”—and more specifically, I zoom in on one particularly compelling component: the fluctuating nature of ADHD symptoms over time.

This idea—that ADHD is not a fixed trait but something that ebbs and flows with age and environment—is grounded in research from the MTA study and recent work by Dr. Margaret Sibley. I explore how her findings challenge our assumptions about stability, diagnosis, and treatment, and I share practical takeaways for clinicians, especially those of us doing ADHD evaluations.

If you’ve ever struggled to reconcile inconsistent ADHD data across settings or over time, this episode is for you. We talk about environmental demand, age-related changes, what “remission” actually means, and why our clinical models need to be more flexible. I also provide concrete recommendations for clinical psychologists to rethink assessment, feedback, and follow-up care based on this evolving understanding of ADHD.

Today we’re diving into one of the most exciting and rapidly evolving areas of psychological assessment—Virtual Reality (VR) and Holistic Assessment. Traditional assessments are incredibly valuable, but they often have limitations—how well do standardized tests translate to real-world functioning? Are we truly capturing the full picture of a client’s needs? What if we could combine cutting-edge VR simulations with comprehensive, holistic evaluations to bridge these gaps?

That’s exactly what we’re exploring today.  If you’ve ever wondered how technology and psychology can merge to create more accurate, immersive, and personalized assessments, this episode is for you.

I talk to a lot of folks during my consulting meetings and coaching groups who are interested in offering an evaluation “menu” in their testing practices. Typically this takes the form of “brief” evaluations answering a specific referral question like, “Does this client have ADHD?” I don’t like this approach, and today I’m digging into research on consumer preferences to explain why. If you’ve ever considered different tiers or “add-ons” for your evals, this is the episode for you!

CMHRC grew out of the awareness that these families and their providers deserve better access to information, resources, and expert guidance as they seek accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
